For the 3rd consecutive year the Colorado State University Extension Office in San Miguel and West Montrose Counties is excited to offer APPLE TREE GRAFTING AND PRUNING WORKSHOPS!

Our instructors are possibly the most knowledgeable and passionate fruit enthusiasts in our region, Jude and Addie Schuenemeyer. They are co-founders of the Montezuma Orchard Restoration Project (MORP). MORP works to preserve Montezuma Valley’s fruit-growing heritage, and restore an orchard culture and economy to the region.

Grafting classes will be held on Friday, February 24 from 6-9pm at the Placerville Schoolhouse and on Saturday, February 25 from 3:30 – 6:30 pm at the Redvale Community Center. Participants will learn hands-on grafting and be able to take home their grafted trees.
A Pruning workshop will be held at a local orchard(s) on Saturday, February 25 from 9am to 2pm. Participants will learn how to prune old and new trees for best fruit production and survivability.

Each Grafting workshop is limited to 18 persons! The cost of Grafting and Pruning together is $60. The cost for Grafting alone is $50. The cost includes a grafting knife, rootstocks, scion wood and grafting supplies. We also encourage you to bring scion wood from trees that you want to propagate. The cost of Pruning alone is $25. Discounts are available to Master Gardener Volunteers and County staff.

We can also take advance orders for additional rootstock. If you are interested, please let us know by the end of the week. The varieties we can get you will be Malus domestica and Anonovka, a cold hardy rootstock. *Discounts given to Colorado Master Gardeners.
