Community Juicing Day: SAT October 19, 2024
Bring your apples one and all and let us turn them into juice before the hard frost comes! Or do you simply want to purchase juice and do not necessarily have apples to bring? Either way, please join us at the Orchard Hub! 13729 Road 29, Dolores, Colorado, 81321.
Here are the logistics and safety details:
Logistics
- You will receive one, 5 liter box of pasteurized juice for every three bushels you bring. In between quantities will be considered donations. The juice you receive will not necessarily be from the apples you bring but part of the community blend.
- Have 20 bushels or more? Consider scheduling our Mobile Juicing Service.
- Harvest from tree or shake onto clean tarp. No ground falls allowed.
- Â Apples must be clean – free of dirt, manure, leaves, twigs, or rot, and harvested into clean, intact crates or bins. See our Harvest Lending Supplies. Do not harvest where there is fresh manure and livestock. Follow GAP practices.
- Heritage apple juice will also be for sale for $20 per box, 5 liters, pasteurized. We are HACCP certified.
- If you are wanting unpasteurized juice, bring your own sanitized containers. No glass please. Suggested donation for unpasteurized juice is $20 per gallon or $10/gallon for every bushel you bring. Drink at your own risk especially if not fermenting into hard cider. Read more here.
Safety
- No pets please
- Kids welcome with careful supervision.
- Stay back from press. Do not climb on it. Only trained operators on or near the press including pallet jack. The press is a dangerous piece of equipment including belt, grinder, boiler, bin tipper, etc.
- To keep potential allergens out of processing area no food or drink (besides water and apple juice) is allowed in facility, on dock, or near press.
- Bathroom available. Wash hands!
- Do not open your pasteurized juice box until the next day as it is packaged scalding HOT. Keep out of reach of children until cool.
- Be informed of potential health hazards if choosing to drink unpasteurized juice which must state the following: “WARNING: This product has not been pasteurized and, therefore, may contain harmful bacteria that can cause serious illness in children, the elderly, and persons with weakened immune systems”.
Volunteer!
Please reach out to express your interest to help with mobile juice activities morp@montezumaorchard.org. Due to health and labor safety issues the minimum age for volunteers around the press is 16 and limited to helping putting juice in the boxes (also labeling and closing them). For other activities around the press volunteers need to be 18+ and must be trained to work on the press.
