Description

Tangerine Group aka Sorrento

What does an apple in Colorado dubbed “unknown, tangerine group”, in Maine named Sorrento, and in Wahington described as “unknown fall” all have in common? Well, they are all the same unknown historic cultivar obviously once popular enough to have been grown from coast to coast, east to west.

DNA results show it is a triploid with no known parents but its extended pedigree indicates it arose a fair way back in apple history. Given its appearance also in Washington, Maine, and Colorado, it surely represents a very old yet popular-back-then cultivar that had a name but hasn’t yet turned up among the thousands of cultivars already tested.

A subacid apple we have enjoyed eating fresh but likely good for many purposes.

This is one of MORP’s endangered Guardian Trees. We encourage you to grow it and add it to Fruit RegisTREE to help with our preservation efforts.
